Buser, Margaret A. – 24
Subjects:
Family life; economic depression
Writing Description:
The memoir is titled IF IT HADN’T BEEN FOR THE ROAD: U.S. 41. In 1926, U.S. 41 replaced a mud road that passed our home in West Central Indiana. I wrote some about the family status before the depression because I don’t believe one can evaluate the present without knowing the past. Most of the book is about the depression and how we were able to save our farm because of the new road. We experienced tramps, Okies, overnight roomers, and John Dillinger and cohorts staying a couple of nights. We weathered the heat, dust, droughts, early and late freezes and the struggle to keep food on the table for at least seven people three times a day!
